Saint Louis University (SLU) in Baguio City started to implement limited face-to-face classes for medical, nursing, and health allied programs.

In a press release from Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on March 26, SLU is among the 24 higher education institutions (HEIs) approved by the commission to hold limited face-to-face classes starting in the second semester of the Academic Year 2020-2021.

According to CHED Chair Prospero de Vera III, the HEIs have fully complied with the CHED-DOH guidelines and have been inspected by CHED and their local government units, so they can now bring third and fourth-year students for hands-on training and laboratory classes in a limited face-to-face system.

In a Facebook post dated May 31, SLU President Fr. Gilbert Sales posted photos of the first day of the physical classes for Nursing students. "Teaching in the new normal," he emphasized in the caption.

Moreover, SLU College of Nursing Dean Dr. Mary Grace Lacanaria stressed that students cannot learn the skills merely online. "We all believe that students cannot learn the skills online, they have to perform it personally with mannequins, using the right equipment so that they can develop their skills, once they have the skills, then we will fill them in to hospitals," she said in an interview with the ABS-CBN News.

"We are anticipating about 80 percent of them (students) will be joining the limited face-to-face, of course. We cannot force them, so only those who are willing of course, with the consent of their parents," Dr. Lacanaria added.

Consequently, CHED mentioned that they will continue to monitor the HEIs and that they are confident that universities will provide safe and healthy spaces for their students in the coming months.

Meanwhile, SLU is the only university in Cordillera Province included in the list of the approved universities and colleges from CHED. SYNC IN
